       Objectives The objective of this course is to develop the language skills required to pursue bilingual studies. It helps consolidate linguistic skills at the receptive level by discovering documents and listening to legal broadcasts. However, it places particular emphasis on written production through syntheses of texts prepared by the students. Skills Outcomes The program allows: - The extension of the legal lexicon and the deepening of the grammar specific to legal texts. - The analysis of legal texts (texts of laws, judgments, deeds ...) - The training in the drafting of various documents with legal content. - The strengthening of written production based on documents concerning legal issues.

       Course objectives

      This course is designed to suit current market demands of translation from French into Arabic and give the opportunity to simulate real life translation scenarios through focusing on recent newspapers articles of various subjects including politics, business, law, medicine and technology.

      This course aims at:

      -         Developing a broad understanding of current and future challenges of translation in different contexts.

      -         Raising the awareness of students to the importance of translation techniques, strategies and approaches, and its value in the job market.

      -         Strengthening the comprehension of source texts and accurate reproduction in the target language.

      -         Enhancing student sense of analysis, critical thinking and and self assessment.

      -         Encouraging the gradual building of independence, time management and communicative skills.

      -         Emphasising on translation as a decision taking process on linguistic, cultural, professional and ethical levels.

      Module: Translation Arabic-English

      1. Course Description

      This unit is intended for advanced university students of English language and literature. The course aims at developing students' linguistic proficiency and translation skills by practicing translation and interpreting of a variety of Arabic-English text types . Students will have opportunities to reflect on, discuss and engage in translation tasks, leading to appreciating translation practice, linguistic and culture issues. The course covers major text types and different discourse levels.

      Course Learning Outcomes :

      1- To demonstrate knowledge and skill in the translation of Arabic and English texts drawn from a variety of common text types.

      2- To possess sufficient translating competence and confidence necessary to consider, accept and undertake appropriate translation tasks.

      3- To recognize and adequately deal with linguistic and stylistic features of various texts types including media, legal, political, medical, literary, academic and religious texts.

      4- To demonstrate knowledge of translation and interpretation strategies covering different text types and discourse levels.

      This task-oriented, practical course is taken in the first and second academic semesters. The course offers sufficient practice and student engagement in translation tasks in class and at home. Student translators are advised to prepare home assignments as required for class sessions to be able to fully engage in classwork, theoretical and practical discussions.

      2. Objectives

      Target students of the translation Arabic-English course have covered one year translation courses. As such, they need to further develop their competence and confidence in this practical discipline. At a relatively advanced level the student translator will have the opportunities:

      1. to revise and employ the basic translating notions and procedures covered in the preceding translation courses.

      2. to acquire a deeper understanding of the professional responsibility reflected in a sufficient application of skills dealing with different text types.

      3. to enhance their understanding of their initial translation strategy in dealing with different text types and language functions.

      4. to improve their bilingual and bi-cultural competence in both English and Arabic, where learning to translate is admitted as a means to enhance language competence and use.

      This acquisition and enhancement will reflect in the student translator being able:

      a. to formulate a clear initial translation strategy.

      b. to formulate clear decisions of detail rationally linked to the strategy.

      c. to assess the salient features of a ST (with a relevant expressive function) and the particular circumstances in which it is to be translated.

      d. to prioritize the cultural, formal, semantic, stylistic, and genre-related properties of the ST according to their relative textual relevance, and the amount of attention they should receive in translation.

      e. to deal with translation loss in a rational and systematic a way.

      f. to lose features that have relatively little textual relevance in a given ST sacrificing less relevant textual details to more relevant ones.

      g. to use compensation to restore features of high textual relevance that cannot be more directly rendered (e.g. a play on words in a literary text).

      Objectives of the course: This course aims at providing students with a theoretical foundation in the field of translation namely translation methodolgies, translation practice, and ethics of translation. Specifically, the course will briefly address the history of translation methodologies namely source oriented and target oriented with their main advocates; approaches of translation (semantic or literal translation ‘source text oriented approaches’ versus communicative or ‘target recipient oriented approaches’); in addition to the problems of translation unit and translation shifts,. Students will develop translation judgment first by learning how to analyze texts in the source language Students are expected to:  Acquire a range of theoretical approaches to translation;  Identify problems and use the appropriate theory to tackle these problems;
